The musical light shows were timed to the Mashd N Kutcher remix ‘Get On The Beers’, and featured graphics from a Daniels Andrews press conference where he uttered those famous words. The displays quickly became the number one search term on the Christmas Light Search directory, which lists thousands of displays across the country.
During the first COVID wave in Melbourne of 2020, Daniel Andrews summoned a press conference on the 23rd of March where he announced one of Melbourne’s first of many lockdowns and cautioned residents of the pandemic.
The lyrics used were those from the Mashd N Kutcher Remix, released 3rd April 2020. These were direct recordings of three sentences spoken by Andrews at the 23rd March press conference.
"You won't be able to go to the pub because the pub is shut. That doesn't mean you can have all your mates around to (your) home and get on the beers, that's not appropriate. It's not essential, it's not needed, and all it will do is spread the virus."
The first Christmas Light display to feature the ‘Get On The Beers’ remix was Grange Road, Sandringham. The show premiered late November 2020 and quickly gained media attention at a time where Christmas Lights across Melbourne were being turned on following the notorious second COVID wave.
Christmas Light Search originally published the video of the musical show on Youtube and Facebook, with it quickly receiving over 20million views, and being reshared on many popular media sites.
The owners of the Sandringham display were also interviewed and featured on local media outlets including The Age newspaper and Channel 7 News.
Shortly after, Gillespie Road, Kings Park programmed their own Christmas Light show rendition to the Mash N Kutcher remix. Kings Park is a single-story display which incorporates a long driveway and smoke and lasers
The last time a Christmas Light display featured Get On The Beers was 2021. Christmas Light Search is not aware of any displays currently performing the Get On The Beers remix in 2022.
Due to the COVID pandemic normalising and lockdowns ending, the meme and remix has lost popularity, however will surely remain a classic for many years to come.
